Children's Birthday Parties

Q:  Can my child celebrate his or her birthday at the Center?

A:  Yes.  Children may celebrate their birthdays at school. If parents choose to bring a birthday treat or goodie bags, please let us know in advance. Parents are welcome to come and join the celebration if they are available. We try to limit the amount of processed sugar our children consume, therefore we ask that healthy food items be included, such as muffins, fruit, cheese sticks, 100% juice, instead of the traditional cake or cupcake with frosting, punch and candy.

If a birthday is to be celebrated away from school and the entire class is not invited, please mail the invitations. If the entire class is invited, please feel free to bring the invitations to school

Discipline

Q:  What do the Center's teachers do when a child misbehaves?

A:  Within a supportive and safe atmosphere, and as a part of our daily curriculum, we foster the development of self-discipline in child.  We teach children that they have a lot power and are responsible for their choices.  We aid children in expressing their feelings and help them develop problem solving and conflict resolution skills.   If an individual is having difficulties in the group setting, teachers observe and assess the behavior and plan ways to help the child.  We try to determine the reason for the behavior.  Does the environment contribute to the problem?  Do we need to change our schedule or grouping of children?  Have we explained our expectations clearly?  Is the child tired, hungry, sad?  Once we've determine the reason, we make the appropriate changes.  We use a two-choice method and the 5 R's (remind, redirect, reinforce, remove, and refer).  We invite parents to be partners in the process as we share information and insights about your child with the staff.

At no time shall any adult in this Center physically harm a child, use verbal threats, or speak to a child in a way which is disrespectful and may lower self-esteem.

Children's Illnesses

Q:  What is the Center's policy about children who are ill?

A:  Every effort is made to prevent the spread of illness and disease.  However, even with all precautions exercised, children entering child care are likely to experience an increase in mild illnesses.  Some symptoms of illness make it mandatory that a child not be in attendance at the Center.  Please ask front desk personnel to see the Illness Exclusion Policy.

Meals

Q:  Can I bring extra food if my child is still hungry after meals?

A:  Yes.  We would be happy to serve your child nutritious snacks from home during our typical meal service times.

Communication Policy

Q:  How do I know what is happening during the day in my child's class?

A:   Teachers send home a daily report that describes your child's activities, rest time, meals, and disposition.  There is also a communication board in front of each class where the weekly lesson plan, daily schedule, menu, newsletter and class reminders are posted.
